Dear Philippe
...
I'm glad I found pictures taken at the Queen concert in Brussels on January 27, 1979. I went to their show the day before (which was the first concert I ever went to) and your photos bring back very good memories. I enjoyed looking at a lot of other photos taken in Brussels too. Thank you for putting them online!
Erik Czerwiec - August 6, 2005
Hi Philippe
...
I was amazed to see your photos, especially of the Futurama gig in Queenshall Leeds!
I am also sad that you are no longer selling fine prints, as all my memorabilia of my Wasted Youth
days was lost in a house fire in 1990, magazines, newspaper clippings, records, everything.
I am slowly rebuilding my collection, however your photos are exactly what I would love to have copies of.
Is there anything you can do to help me?? I wait in anticipation, fantastic photos
Regards
Ken Scott from Wasted Youth - February 9, 2005
Beautiful photographs.
Truly one of the few photographers to capture the utter beauty and sadness of Ian Curtis.
Absolutely gutted that Philippe is not interested in selling fine prints of these.
Such a shame. If you change your mind Philippe, let me know as I'd pay good money for a simple print.
Ed King - January 7, 2005
Hi Phillipe, it was very nice wandering through your site.
I've been taking concertphoto's during ten years ( the 90's ) for several newspapers in Belgium, Flanders.
Think I've done 'em all, from PJ Harvey to Michael Jackson, I had a wonderfull time doing so,
but how I wish I had been there one decade earlier, to see Joy division perform live.
But then again, maybe it's better this way, the myth of new wave stays intact, wich can not be said of the myth of the ninetees.
Bye.
Marco Mertens - January 3, 2005
Great site! Such dedication and high quality camera work!
Stef Slembrouck - January 3, 2005
Hi, I'm Elena from Rome.....I was surfin' on the web, seaching for Joy
Division shoots............and then! I found you, I found Cure, Siouxsie,
Bauhaus, Ian Curtis, and many others dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great site, great shoots, great years and music....I'm only sad at the
time I was too small and too far from England where all of that happened.
Kiss, love.

HiI just wanted to take the time to thank you for all the memories you bring back with your photos.
It's unbelievable just how many shows you did get to see. I found bands on your list that I had completely forgotten about.
The shots of Clock DVA brought back an especially magical time for me in NYC back in '83 when I saw them.
Your photo's must be from the same tour. Thanks for all your hard work putting your site together.
I plan to spend a lot of time going through your photo's and reminiscing.
Greetings from Susie in New York

Dear Philippe,I am Marc from the Netherlands and I am 39 years old.
We are playing a band Ro-robot (www.ro-robot.com)and shooting a video in two weeks; we were
stumbling round the net for some inspiration and then came across your site.
Man......is's really awsome.
What nice posing. At the time most of these were shot I was too young for
concerts but some of the bands I saw. Shivers are running down my spine
when I saw the Television and Gang of Four pics.
After more than 20 years the bands finally start getting a face.
When you are in the Netherlands or in Germany we want to be photographed
by you.
Ro-robot salutes Phillipe! - September 21, 2004
Hi Philippe,I've spent the better part of my night viewing your photos
from an incredible era. I look back fondly on my days of shooting in the
80's but your slice of the pie really does bring out the envy in me. You've
a few years on me, but the bands you shot were my inspiration for so much
of my upbringing. thanks for the memories.

Salut Philippe,
Rossini Luc - May 24, 2004
Congratulations on a fantastic website, it is hard to come up with enough superlatives to describe my joy in seeing these pics.
Wonderful job!! Brings back many memories (most of them good!) of another time, and many other places.
I especially enjoyed your bio describing how you got into photography. My story is almost exactly the same.
I started perhaps a little earlier than you, around '75 I took my first concert photo's of The Who, Slade, Ten Years After, Fleetwood Mac
(not on the same bill) @ the now defunct Winterland Arena in San Francisco. My interest imagination was captured by the advent of Punk and New Wave.
I'm sure you would agree it was a fairly decent method to learn photography, and what makes a good photo. You have front lighting, back lighting,
side lighting, brilliant white hot spots, deep velvet reds, electric blue's, and on top of all that...often alot of motion!
It was so much fun after a gig, scanning the negs and/or slides for that classic print!
I shot many of the bands you did, however it sounds like you were extremely well connected as far as your access to the bands.
I loved the casual shots of some of my favourites like Siouxsie and The Jam. I did end up with some fantastic colour transparencies of Devo covering 3 or 4 tours I think? Some great Peter Gabriel from '80 and '82 also.
Anyway... thanks again for the memories. What exciting times those were for music...
There seemed to be alot of rough edges to the music scene back then,...way too sterile is the music scene today!
Thanks again,
P.S. Oh yeah, thanks for the early Killing Joke photo's also! I saw them at The Whiskey in L.A. back then. Brought back memories seeing Jaz with his 'warpaint' smeared all over
Stuart Polson - May 15, 2004
hi phil,
a friend just told me about our photos on your page.
I just checked and it and I must say: really fantastic!!.
Nearly 21 years later. Respect to your work and fanx for the memory-shot in my brain.
Still the question of the sense of life and brain war around ourself.
Take care an a big tank you by

Hello Philippe,
Great photographs,
amazing to be able to "see" back into the long -
forgotten reality of a special time.
Thanks for the memories. Congratulations on your excelent site too - I look forward to seeing more and more of your images appearing.
PS did you know that YMG have reformed to attempt a second album?
Cheers,
Stuart (Moxham) (Young Marble Giants) - May 3, 2004
Dear Philippe,
Thank you very much !
It feels like a real honour,
standing between our favourite bands;
Bauhaus, The Sisters, Siouxsie,....
Of course I will make a link,
not only to our pictures,
but to your whole, beautiful and interesting website !
...
Again, thank you !
With kind regards,
Danny Dup (Lizard Smile) - April 19, 2004
... I'm realy happy you took an interest in the support for The Mission at Gavere -
the chance to play with this band was a wonderful opportunity.
The resulting pictures and our inclusion on your impressive website make it even more worthwile...
A big THANK YOU!
Strobocop (Lizard Smile guitarist) - April 19, 2004
This website is Rocks! It is absolutely fantastic.
Not only does it bring back terrific memories,
but also shows me what a great time you must have been having during the 70’s and 80’s.
I play in a revival band, so it’s great to look back at some of those that inspired me to get into music;
The Specials, The Selecter, Madness, The Jam, The Clash, The Undertones.
Thank You. Thank you. Thank You.
DJ - March 1, 2004 www.specialbrew.info
Well !
Ian Curtis, Adrian Borland,
Franck Tovey....
Well...merci encore
Bruno - January 4, 2004
Hallo Philippe,
I wanna thank you so much for the beautiful pictures of the Blondie concert last Friday. I really enjoyed the concert and what a surprise it was to find these pictures on your site already the same night!!!!! BEAUTIFUL!!! Thanks a lot. By the way, I think I spotted you on the first row during the gig, but of course I'm not sure.... I saw a man on the left side of the stage with a camera 'round his neck, so.....
Keep up the good work!!!!
Kind regards,
Walter De Coninck - December 1, 2003
Hello
I just wanted to express how much I love your site.
These are photos of bands I missed the first time around but have really influenced my music.
I love the Gang of Four, Killing Joke, the Clash and too many others to mention that you have on your site.
It will prove to be an inspiration for me and my music. It's nice to be able to see the fashions of some of the more "underground" bands. You are obviously a big music fan.
My band website is www.speedtokill.com. Anyhow...Thanks again for the site.
Sincerely,
Jason Corbett - November 25, 2003
A simple "thank you"... for your time and generosity in putting together this photo album.
It really enables me to put the music into a visual historical context. Kudos.
Brian Michael Taylor - November 13, 2003
Dear Philippe,
What a fantastic site! I'm especially impressed by the X-Mal Deutschland
photos, because there is so little material to be found about them now. I
was intrigued by the photo shoot in the abandoned warehouse, or whatever it
was. It looked bloody freezing. Thanks again from a regular visitor.
Dave Langton - November 6, 2003
Philippe, my namesake,
Good on you for saving all those gig tickets and photographing them for
posterity! You've seen some incredible bands, you lucky thing; I especially
love the Runaways photos. Thanks for the glimpse via your website.
Still exploring it...
Philippa (Sydney, Australia) - October 19, 2003
Brilliant!! Brilliant!!!
The Clash pictures you took are fantastic.
Thank you.
There isn't a day that I dont have at least one Clash song on the stereo.
I had had your site bookmarked for a long period of time, but am very glad you got around to showing the Clash photos.
It made my day!
Thanx again and I have sent your site on to a lot of people.
Nicely done ... and ... thanks!Andrew - September 22, 2003
Outstanding!!
I was an avid concert goer as well as a local
working musician back in the late 70s and early 80s. Today
I'm still an avid concert goer and local working musician
but remember those concerts from the new wave era with extra
fondness. I just stumbled on your site today and looked at
a lot of photos from tours I actually saw. Wow! That brings
back some memories.
Nicely done ... and ... thanks!Glenn Poorman - September 15, 2003
Hi Philippe,...I checked out your site and think it's awesome.... Damn! you have some bands that I absolutely LOVE on your site....Joy Division, The Cure, Nick Cave, Siouxie and the Banshees, Echo and the Bunnymen and INDOCHINE!!! anyhow...I love music from the 70's and 80's..especially the bands you have on there..wow... Excellent Jam photos......
cheers for sharingSimon Fox - September 5, 2003
...they are a brilliant set of photos capturing Elkie (Brookes) In Full Flight -displaying a whole range of emotions.
Some of the shots have a very arty studio effect...
The concert was part of a European tour, with the same outfits being photographed in many different cities but your set is exceptionally good,
due to the clarity, the energy conveyed and some very flattering shots...
Dave West - September 1, 2003
Hi Phillipe,
Nice site, great to see all those photos. I'd be happy to get a link up on my site to it. Unfortunately I can't find any record of the date of that gig...in fact I couldn't even remember the name of the venue before your mail! If I do ever find out I'll let you know. Wish I had kept some diaries or something at the time, but I'm afraid I wasn't that organised...
Best wishes

J'ai passé l'après-midi, hier, sur ton site. J'ai vraiment éprouvé
beaucoup de plaisir à revoir tout ça! Il y a même des trucs que j'avais
oublié avoir vu (Passions, Gang of 4, Au Pairs).
Merci encore.

Thanks for sharing all this great material.

Wow, awesome site bro. Finally someone that has been to more shows then me,
and photographed them. :) not to mention total succeed in preserving an
beautiful era in music. Just curious, were these acts well known at the
time when you saw them, or were they local bands per say?
Anyway, I'm going to put a link up on my site within the week. Looking
forward to the rest of your pics going up!

Hi,
I read your letter on the Dominion list. I think it's ridiculous the way you were treated. Andrew (Sisters of Mercy - webmaster) should be happy that someone is still interested in taking his picture after all this time. I would be totally ticked off by the whole thing.
By the way, I enjoy your photos. Very nice work.
Best,

Just a quick message to let you know I think your website is absolutely superb! Ahhhhhh.....remembering the days of all these fantastic bands.
Keep up the excellent work, I am very impressed with the Blondie Tiffanys photos, I have never seen any from that gig before.

Ha!!
Great Brian Brain pics from Futurama. I remember that gig really well, went
down like a sack of shite but good fun nonetheless.
Cheers
Pete Jones (Brian Brain bass player) - November 24, 2002
Really enjoying trawling through your excellent collection of photographs. You have a good talent.
I was at the Futurama Festival in Leeds in '80 and then again in Stafford in '81. Great to see memories brought back to life from then. I still smile when I think of the Virgin Prunes, and Jim Kerr throwing up on stage and managing to make it look kind of graceful!
Please post more shots soon. Particularly The Teardrop Explodes, but so much of what you have listed looks really exciting too.
Thanks for the enjoyment.
Mark - November 19, 2002
Hi Philippe,
... I have just looked at your site - amazing! A truly phenomenal life seeing and documenting some fantastic concerts! I am looking forward to when you upload the Ghost Dance and Lords of The New Church photos - as a fellow webartist I can appreciate how long it will take though!
... congratulations again on the great work celebrating the greatest artform of them all - Rock and Roll!
Cheers
Steve Pegrum - October 24, 2002
I was a fraid - very afraid - when I got your message.
But I am lucky - lucky that there was actually a GOOD photographer in the hall that night!
I remember this show well, as it was Lio's very first time on stage. She was great fun.
It was also one of our first shows with the tuxedos and bright new post-punk look.
If I remember correctly, the audience was full of fans of The Kids from Antwerp.
They weren't much into post-modern "jeunes gens modernes" fun and games and gave Lio a hard time.
She didn't care (what a sport).
Michael Leahy (Mad Virgins singer) - October 21, 2002
..I ...uggh!! The pictures you take are wonderful!
It's like magic, you know, how you were able to capture so much character in them! There just soo rich and crisp and...
I love the contrast (black and white). I'm an amateur photographer myself and took a few classes in high school (I'm a freshmen in college now).
I was astonished when I came across your photo while looking up info on The Cure. I'm so interested in photography, and, wow, this really motivates me to keep doing what I love!
Thank you veeerrrryyy much for sharing them!!
Angelica Nater - October 18, 2002
Wow!! Philippe, These are fantastic pics.
Sure brings back a lot of memories - U2, Bow wow wow,
The Banshees, The Jam........ a great time to be alive
I think!
I will add a link to your website from mine somewhere.
Keep 'em coming.

Greetings Philippe from USA
Your website is fantastic! Being an avid collector of this period, and
student of this music since it was happening, I recognize your name from UK
publications plus the "An Ideal for Living" book by Joy Division. You are
among the classic era photographers.....Barry Plumber, Anton Corbijn, Peter
Anderson, Kevin Cummins...
All of you did some fantastic photos documenting this period
with flair. The Black and White exposures are so classic.....so much
better than the color glossy type that were so prevalent in Smash Hits.
Your shots of Joy Division are stunning....I wish I could have been at that
gig! I'm interested in purchasing a few of these shots for framing in my
house....
I had no idea you covered so many bands....very impressive list. Glad to
see Die Unbekannten, I'm so Hollow, Aroma di Amore, B Movie....etc. I look
forward to seeing those on your site. Also, Crispy/ACR will be nice to
see. Might you have snapped shots of Modern Eon, Tunnelvision, Party Day,
Mecano, Ballet m.Ecanique, Red Zebra, Before, Luddites...?
Thank you,
Marc Berger - August 21, 2002
Philippe,
Great site. Nice to see the passage of time hasn't aged the quality of the
photography or the artists. The Josef K pictures especially, Plan K was only
ever a figment of my imagination! Much respect for maintaining the faith!
Spencer Roberts, England - August 21, 2002
I'm really excited to get the photos next week already.
Yes, I really liked the last three pictures from the second JD gig (i.e. "shadow"/"microphone"),
they have a lot of atmosphere, and I understand what you mean about premonition as Ian died only a few months later,
leaving the singer's spot in front of the microphone empty! I definitely love that photo, it has so much "presence"
if you know what I mean, even if there's no person visible.
I saw someone complained on your site about the prices.
Well... I think your photos are reasonably priced if anything.
A friend of mine in London who's also a JD collector contacted Kevin Cummins,
and found out that he charges £100.00 for one single photo! And this was some years ago!
With all the extra work you put into cleaning the negatives etc... I think you deserve every penny you're asking.
Maybe I should write this in your guestbook :)
I must say once more that I think you're a great photographer.
Like I mentioned before I have obtained some JD photos already from a few professional photographers,
but yours look better! I ordered some JD photos from Steve Richards (Rockphotos) in London,
I see he left a message in your guestbook too.
He's really nice, and I like his photos a lot, but they're not as good as yours.
They're a bit dark and not always that clear whereas yours are much clearer and detailed,
with both light and darkness (not just darkness)...
Thanks again!
All the best
Jan Erik Justesen - August 8, 2002
Hi Philippe,
Just came across your photo site and was very impressed by the quality
of photos, particularly the Joy Division ones. I have a request - do

Hope to hear from you soon,

Hi Philippe
Just a quick note to say your photographs & site is fantastic -
especially the Siouxsie pictures!
I hope you keep adding to the collection already on there as it's
amazing to find such high quality pictures from the '79-81 era!
Best regards
Oliver - June 2, 2002
Dear Philippe,
Many, many thanks for your Siouxsie and the Banshees site. In my opinion, it's THE BEST I HAVE SEEN!
I have followed Siouxsie since I was 13 (in 1977!) and my interest has never died down.
However, my favourite Banshees period is 1977-1980, particularly when Morris and McKay were part of the line-up.
Your site has so many photos of this period THAT I HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE, that I spent hours going over them.
Can't wait to see your other photos from this period!
Keep up your excellent site, I'll be a regular visitor!
Thanks again!
Best wishes,
Mark Ashworth - June 2, 2002

Hello Philippe
Your site is absolutely wonderful,
the pics of Siouxsie and The Banshees are
just brilliant!
How come you've had them hidden for so long?
I would love to buy prints of some of the Siouxsie pics if possible,
and I wait with baited breath to see what Bauhaus and Cocteau Twins pics you have!
I have some of my own personal Banshee pics.
Not as grand and as personal as yours!
Thanks mate,

Hi Philippe,
Just found your web site and must say I love the pictures of Siouxsie and co, they are fabulous.
I am the web master of The Banshees & Other Creatures web site, formerly Erasercuts.
I would love to be able to include one or two of your pictures on my site and of course a link to it.
Let me know if it would be ok to use a couple of pics and of course I will be including a link anyway.
No offence if the answer is no, just thought I'd ask, as I get pissed off with people just pinching stuff from my site to include on theirs
without asking.
Thanks,

Yes,
Thank you so much for taken these wonderful pictures of Siouxsie and her trusty Banshees!!!
Oh well, Severin, at least...
I should be saving some money, hopefully, soon I will be ordering some prints from you.
Love them,

Hi again Philippe!
I’m happy that you sent me a mail about your link to my page otherwise I might not have seen your own page.
I’m soooo extremely impressed by all your old good pictures of the bands I loved those years.... and in some cases still do.
Keep scanning. It’s a pleasure returning back every time to your page.
All the best,
Robert Petersson - May 2, 2002
Hi,
I’m a french cure fan and I would like to know if you got some Cure pics (or even cure tics from 79-80 or more).
Your siouxsie sections is definitly great ! I’m jealous you did so many siouxsie shows !

Hello Phillipe,
Thanks for your comments about my Rockphotos site and for adding a link on yours.
I took a look and was seriously overwhelmed by the quality and quantity of photos.
You do this as a job don’t you? Either that or you’re fanatically keen!
Best of luck, I’m sure you’ll get many, many visitors.

Hi Philippe,
...I just had a look at your site and it looks great, and I will be happy to buy
some of your pictures (JD and other bands) in the near future!
... You surely have an impressive collection! Good luck
with all the scanning, keep up the good work.
Cheers,

Such beautiful pictures…
My greatest regret is not being able to see a Queen concert (was too young :-( )

Holy Smoke!
I’ve seen lots of your pictures before. Fantastic!
I had to take a look in “An ideal for Living” (JD book) to see more of your pictures.
Joy Division always been own of my favourite band. Siouxsie and the Banshees too.
Really nice and good pictures you’ve got. I must say that you have a really good eye.
Seems like we use similar technique when we take concert pictures.
I will add a link to your page as soon as I update... You very much deserve it!!
All the best,
Robert Petersson - April 12, 2002
